What is KANNA / SCELETIUM?

Kanna or Sceletium has been used for centuries in South Africa as a traditional medicinal herb and natural anti-depressant by San and Khoikhoi people. Traditionally the plant is chewed, brewed into teas, or smoked. South African San people use Kanna (or also known as Kougoed) as a mood enhancer, pain reliever, sleeping aid, to relieve anxiety or stress, quench their thirst, fight fatigue, or for healing and spiritual purposes.

Both TRISTILL & KANNAXEON contain Sceletium Tortuosum extract – although they each have different alkaloid profiles (mesembrine). The active constituents of the Sceletium plant are Alkaloids – which include mesembrine, mesembrone, mesembrenol and tortuosamine. This variety of Alkaloids have a positive effect on the nervous system. Alkaloids are a class of basic, naturally occurring organic compounds that contain at least one nitrogen atom. This group also includes some related compounds with neutral and even weakly acidic properties. Alkaloids are present in human daily life in food and drinks. They act as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, analgesics, local anaesthetic and pain relief, neuro-pharmacologic, antimicrobial, antifungal, and many other activities.

The quality of Sceletium is very dependent on various factors which affect the qualities of the plant. The climate, geographical location and time of harvesting all play a major role in the integrity of the active ingredients.

KANNAXEON has a lower mesembrine (the major alkaloid present in Sceletium Tortuosum) and higher D7 mesembrenone alkaloid profile – which together act as a more potent anti-anxiety & general relaxant. Mesembrine has been shown to act as a serotonin re-uptake inhibitor. Seratonin is a chemical that transmits messages between nerve cells – known as the “happy chemical”. This is why it is shown to help regulate moods / anxiety, depression and sleep. It may offer natural relief from stress and anxiety and could assist with mental hyperactivity, due to its calming effect.

Kannaxeon contains 15mg of Sceletium tortuosum extract, which is produced using a proprietary extract method, blended with Mannitol (Mannitol is a type of carbohydrate called a sugar alcohol, or polyol.
